FAT AS ENERGY

Fat as energy is not something many of us think about often. Body fat stores are important for survival in starvation and undernutrition. Body fat has a purpose!

TYPES OF FAT

Did you know that fat can be white, brown or beige? Each of these fats have a purpose. Brown fat seen mostly in babies burns fatty acids, keeping them warm. Newly investigated beige fats are felt to have similar characteristics as brown fat. White fat is what we all think about. Stored below our skin and around our organs, it is energy to use later. White fat also plays a large role in the function of hormones.

Essential fats we all need and are found in your brain, bone marrow, nervous system and surrounding organs. The fats that help our brain function are omega 3 fatty acids. The purpose of bone marrow adipose (fat) is not exactly known yet. It is thought to be associated with osteoporosis and may increase fracture risk. Fats are used by our body to build nerve tissue and hormones. Visceral fat is around our organs and is protective.

FAT FOR FUEL (ENERGY)

Fats are a very efficient form of energy, the body stores any excess energy as fat. As mentioned above, fat plays a role in protecting us from starvation and undernutrition. This important role fat plays goes way back to the days of hunting and gathering. Food was not always in the fridge and so we stored energy to keep us going until our next meal could be found. Fats are efficient IN THIS JOB because they are slow to break down and stick with us for a long while.

Fast forward from the days of hunting and gathering to 2021. My fridge is always filled with food, as is the pantry. I know this is not the case for every human being on planet earth, but it certainly is the case for many of us. Yet our body has been trained to store fat just in case we starve to death!

We are no longer eating extremely high protein diets with fibres that come right off the vines. To retrain our fat efficient bodies we can eat healthy superfoods and use our bodies more in our daily effort to live. Due to sedentary jobs many of us can improve our fat as energy stores by building moderate movement practices.

As I have said before, I do not promote obesity nor do I promote weight loss.
