FOCUS YOUR HEALTH ON PROPHYLAXIS
Focus your health on prophylaxis – stay well!!!
Prophylaxis is prevention. Prevention maintains health. Cure happens after you have become unwell and are in need of ways to return to health. We will all need a cure at some time in our life, but we can do a lot in regards to prevention!
We are indeed Lucky To Be Born In Canada. I firmly believe this. I also believe our healthcare system, along with that of other nations HAS THE HEALTH EQUATION BACKWARDS!!
PROPHYLAXIS OVER CURE
Prophylactic care takes many forms. As a migraine sufferer from the age of 16, I take medication to prevent migraines. When we think about prevention, this is often where our thoughts go – medical science and medication to prevent increased suffering from illness we already suffer. This is a valid and necessary form of healthcare.
Now imagine if your healthcare system promoted activity, prevention and education from a young age. Think about being taught more about healthy eating and healthy living as part of education – make physical education, music and other arts mandatory in government budgets so as to contribute to our well-being? Why not be taught meditation and coping mechanisms to help develop good mental health? Why are dental care and mental health care not covered by healthcare systems? Both are prophylactic and curative.
Can you picture a way that EVERY child in Canada can have food on their plate – healthy food everyday? As a priority for our government this too would be prophylaxis. An abundance of healthy green veggies and available fruit for every individual in Canada could and would prevent much illness, both physical and mental. What if we could eliminate the need for families to use food banks? Read Plant-Based Eating For Improved Health to understand how the availability of healthy food can effect health.
TYPES OF PROPHYLAXIS
Primary prevention is the term used when talking about the avoidance of disease or disability. This is up to you! Exercise, good nutrition and immunization are all forms of primary prevention. Forming healthy habits from a very young age is the best way to promote ongoing health. As we grow up adopting moderate use of alcohol, driving the speed limit, remaining active, eating well and maintaining self-care are also prophylactic.
Secondary prevention refers to early detection of disability or disease. In Canada we are pretty good at this, but in the USA, this is more of a problem due to the cost of healthcare. As we age, the risk of developing disease becomes greater making things like PSA tests for men to detect prostate cancer or mammography to detect breast cancer ways of finding illness early. Participation in the programs designed to find illness early is your responsibility.
Tertiary prevention is about trying to improve your quality of life and reduce the symptoms of a disease you already have. This is where most of our healthcare is centred. My opinion here is that this is because ILLNESS is BIG BUSINESS. I am in no way saying this is not necessary, of course it is. However, placing emphasis on primary prevention would reduce the need for tertiary prevention.
Our civic system is set up such that we pay taxes to our government to be used to sustain society and its’ needs. Part of this pays for our healthcare and education in the country and in each province. Reform of this system so that it would promote health rather only curing illness would indeed also be prophylactic!
PERSONAL PRIMORDIAL PREVENTION
Primordial prevention avoids the development of risk factors in the first place. This is primarily through lifestyle, thus avoiding the use of medications to treat risk factors. Some of us could avoid the expensive coronary surgeries and other procedures, saving money for the individual, family, and the society.
As a society, our tax dollars could be put to better use. MORE IMPORTANTLY, as individuals we would live healthier, more vivacious, content and well lives if all aspects of healthcare were taught, supported by habits and continued throughout our lives.
FOCUS YOUR HEALTH ON PROPHYLAXIS
Perhaps I am an anomaly in that I spend a lot of time everyday in consideration of how to make my life and yours healthier and filled with contentment, but perhaps NOT! I think a lot of you share my concern! I urge you to focus your health on prophylaxis.
