KNOW HOW DIETING CAUSES GALLSTONES!
Do you know how dieting causes gallstones? Fasting can too! Fasting is a new, dangerous trend in the diet industry.
Not only are gallstones formed as part of the dieting process, but repeated dieting and regaining of weight is a one-way ticket to a gallbladder full of painful stones! Fasting can cause weight loss to occur too quickly. Knowing how dieting causes gallstones can help you avoid this!
This has been me! In my life, I can recall at least 3 times I have lost significant amounts of weight, only to regain it. Saying that diets do not work, is a bit of a misnomer. Diets work. Dieting will lead to weight loss. However, dieting does not always result in the weight staying off. Losing and gaining and losing and gaining is NOT GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH.
WebMD in What Happens to Your Body When You Yo-Yo Diet, discusses several issues around the risks related to weight loss and regaining patterns. About gallstones they say “Being overweight can make you get them. Tricky thing is, so can LOSING weight too quickly, like on a crash diet. As you repeat the weight gain-loss CYCLE, your chances for having a gallstone KEEPS GOING UP. And the odds rise higher the more weight you lose and regain.”
I have a healthy gallbladder, but it is full of sludge and stones. This creates huge pain and stress for me, as I also have trauma in and around surgery, which has made it difficult for me to have my gallbladder removed right now.
The topic of Yo-Yo Dieting is a MAJOR health concern and can be controversial. I will address it another time.
HOW DIETING CREATES GALLSTONES
Your gallbladder is a pouch that contains bile. Bile is a fluid, made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. When we eat, the gallbladder contracts, allowing bile to release into our stomach, to help in breaking down our food before it moves into our bowels. When you FAST or lose weight too quickly, your liver releases more cholesterol than usual into your bile. This extra cholesterol collects and becomes gallstones!
Fast weight loss can also cause the gallbladder from emptying properly, thus leaving more cholesterol-filled bile inside the gallbladder, creating collections (stones). The faster the loss, the more likely stones are being created. People who have bariatric surgery for weight loss (as an example of a fast weight loss method), due to health issues, are at high risk for gallstones.
THE CHOICE – MY OPINION!
#1 My weight is directly linked to GENETICS. My weight is influenced by my CHOICES as well! Everyone gets to make decisions in and around their body – for THEMSELVES.
#2 You can choose to lose or you can chose not to. KNOWLEDGE and being informed is the most IMPORTANT THING HERE. Make informed choices about all things health related.
#3 If you choose to lose – go slow. Fast weight loss is NEVER healthy! This is the answer to the question asked in my title – now you know how dieting causes gallstones.
If a health-related issue (The Need To Adapt – My Fat-related Diagnosis) leads you to chose to lose, take it easy on yourself. There may be a need to adapt. When diagnosed with fatty liver I immediately thought, as a trained response, back to the scales I go! Then, over time, I realized this DID NOT HAVE TO BE THE CASE. There are so many ways to work towards reduction of fat, to help my fatty liver, without being a slave to the scale. Pounds Not Progress really describes how I feel about this. I know when I am taking good care of myself, I know when I am advocating for my own health and I KNOW WHEN I AM NOT!
FACTS AND CONCLUSIONS
Know that if dieting causes gallstones you may not have options. If your gallbladder itself becomes diseased (infected), it needs to come out! If you have accumulated stones in a healthy gallbladder, improved food choices may help. Please remember, I am not a doctor! All your health decisions NEED to be made with the help of your Primary Care Provider. BUT…
I have managed my yo-yo dieting gallbladder (not infected), full of stones, with wiser health choices. I am eating a plant-based diet and this has helped a lot. Staying away from the sweets I love on a daily basis, helps too. ON A DAILY basis means you do not have to deprive yourself, be moderate.
You can avoid gallstones (if not being caused by something else) by not yo-yo dieting, not losing weight fast. No fasting! Maintain HEALTHY eating patterns and stay ACTIVE.
Live Fat and Fit is NOT HERE to tell anyone what to do. My goal is to INFORM you of your options. Lay out the FACTS and help you to make decisions, as information is often lacking. My experience has been that unless pushed to explain in detail, and in lay terms, some medical professionals can be less than helpful with info!
Now you have the facts about gallstones, yo-yo dieting and weight. I hope you find this helpful and I hope if you ever have a question as a result of any of my posts, you will reach out to me at email@example.com.
