NOT BEING FOOLED, THERE IS NO PARADOX!

You are not being fooled, there is no paradox! Google search, key phrase “Fat and Fit,” on Sunday, June 13, 2021. When I did this, the first 19 posts were articles challenging or affirming the term Fat and Fit. Number 20, was livefatandfit.com! Although this can change quickly, I am celebrating this accomplishment.

#1 was Harvard Health, where in an article your cannot read unless you are a paying member, their “snippet” states “While there is NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL number when it comes to a person’s ideal weight, men should not ignore significant weight gain and the implications it has for their future health.”

#2 was goodhousekeeping.com and an article entitled Is It Possible to Be “Overweight” and Healthy? This is a very current piece from March 2021. The subtitle is, “Experts breakdown what it means to be “FAT AND FIT.” I encourage you to read this article. In it, Dr. Mysore, a primary care physician in New York states “It’s the health-supporting BEHAVIOURS you practice on a DAILY basis, as well as crucial HEALTH indicators like blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and hormone levels, that may matter more than your BMI or the number on the scale.”

#3 CNN. This is an article that is mostly negative, yet still states “After investigating the associations between BMI, activity level and risk factors, researchers concluded that any level of ACTIVITY meant it was LESS likely that an individual would have any of the three risk factors compared with no exercise, with the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes decreasing with increased activity levels.”

  1. Diets do not work … “Since 1959, research has shown that 95 to 98 percent of attempts to lose weight fail and that two-thirds of dieters gain back more than they lost.”
  2. “Medical establishment has learned and rejected over and over again that weight and health are not perfect synonyms.”
  3. Doctors spend LESS time with fat people than others!
  4. After an anesthesiologist administers medications to a patient on an operating table, doctors talk about the patient. As a nurse, I have attended surgeries and can attest to the fact that surgeons discuss their patients in less than respectful ways.
  5. According to a survey performed in 2015, medical students get about 19 hours of teaching about nutrition, in a 4-year program. The survey actually showed that this was less than they were receiving in 2006.
  6. Insurance companies in the USA, flag doctors who do not work with their patients to formulate a weight-reduction plan and assign them low ratings and poor performance reviews.
  7. “Which brings us to the most hard-wired problem of all: Our shitty attitudes toward fat people.”

IMAGINE A WORLD

Not being fooled, there is no paradox. Both fat and fit, can and do, exist in the same body. You Choose Fitness or Super Fitness, talks about my journey to practical fitness after a long struggle with PTSD and depression! Mental health plays a huge role in your wellness.

We all have rightful dominion over our bodies. However, our genetic makeup is not of our choosing. Studies have found several genes that contribute to weight and fat distribution. Also not in our control, is the relationship with food we are taught by our family of origin.

IMAGINE teaching children love for their bodies. Consider confidence and self-esteem learned at a young age. Imagine encouraging self-respect and teaching TRUTH about healthy eating. What an impact that would have!

IMAGINE doctors advocating for size diversity and health. Think about a school system that encourages movement for all bodies and supports ALL of us in the movement choices we make. Consider the association between body mass index and suicide becoming less and less. The emotional benefits would be HUGE!!

Eating disorders are prevalent in industrialized nations. These countries teach a link between SLIMNESS and SUCCESS. Picture children taught by magazines, television and their parents, that any body, any person can be successful and all bodies are beautiful. Create a vision of sustainable habits and practices that support individuals and communities! IMAGINE!

IMAGINE THE WELLNESS

In 1969, The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance was born. The site bodypositive.org, emerged in 1996, created by a psychiatrist with a patient who was dealing with an eating disorder. Today, body NEUTRALITY is taking hold (beginning in about 2015). Thank goodness for that!! Body neutrality promotes accepting your body AS IT IS and asks you to acknowledge ALL the AMAZING things your body does for you. PRAISE its nonphysical characteristics, take the emphasis off of appearance. Challenge the connection between appearance and worth. Objectify bodies less and less.

IMAGINE the wellness this WILL bring! Think about healthy children taught to eat foods that are nourishing and bring them joy. What will things be like when we respect our bodies (both our own and OTHERS) and we understand movement as part of our routine, because we enjoy it and it gives us energy?

LIVE FAT AND FIT

Live Fat and Fit is about bodies doing great things, every single day. This is a learning curve for me and many others. Not taught this as a child, I DID NOT experience the world I imagine. I have had to learn that food is for FUEL AND FUN and MOVEMENT is part of a lifestyle that keeps me mobile and PHYSICALLY and MENTALLY well!

Nursing College taught me science, that I challenge when it seems wrong. I am not being fooled and there is no paradox. All BODIES ARE CAPABLE OF BEING FIT! All bodies can be well. Health is about the important combination of mental and physical wellness AND fitness!
