SAFFI IS THE KEEPER OF MY SOUL
Saffi is the keeper of my soul. She is my companion, friend and partner … Saffi is a CAT! I have had dogs as part of my family when I was a child and I brought dogs into my family as an adult. Rodents too actually, hamsters, rats and guinea pigs. Being allergic to cats when I was younger, I had never gotten to know one well.
THEN I MET OREO! Oreo is my friend’s cat and he is so dreamy, it is amazing. Such a handsome guy, with a lovely personality and bar none the best whiskers I have ever seen. I am smitten!!
My daughter is a crazy cat lady and has known the wonders of sharing her home with cats for years. She loves their sassy outlook on life and enjoys their company. My friend Georgie, also rescued no less than 12 feral cats from the Beaches in Toronto. These were cats her mum had cared for and she would not see them left to their own devices after mum’s passing.
My daughter’s friend had a litter of kittens needing homes. Their Mom was the cat who lived at the family business’ shop. I decided I wanted to add a cat to my family.
Naming was the first big thing to think about. Next, I had to think about taking care of a kitten’s needs and learning about vet requirements for a kitten. The name Saffi came from a doctor at the hospital where I work. Names are extremely important when you add to your family, as I believe a name becomes part of our identity.
The moment I brought Saffi home and I put her on the floor, she started to purr and my heart melted. Her biological mom had done a great job training her and she was playful and rather fond of hiding in drawers. Spending a lot of time in the bathroom, she accompanied me into the bathroom everyday and played around the edge of the tub, as I was bathing.
UNEXPECTED KEEPER OF MY SOUL
What was to come next was completely unexpected. I became ill and was spending a lot of time in bed. I was worried that she would be neglected, but Saffi surprised me. She became my constant companion. Saffi was at my side while I was in bed with migraines and was at my side while I was trying to work rather unsuccessfully. She was on top of me when I was on the chaise trying to manage my breath and she purred to help calm my anxiety. She was/has been a saving grace in my life. I now completely understand about therapy animals!
VALUED FAMILY MEMBER
The value of having an animal in your family is undefinable. Together, we have created the safe zone we need to be able to live contently. I helped her with getting to know my daughter’s cat family (as we are all now sharing a home) and she helps me with EVERYTHING. She assists me when I am writing, and throws toys at me to play fetch. Saffi performs yoga poses as well as I do, even the downward dog! She paws at my back when she is hungry (as we cannot leave food out for free feeding) and she has become THE KEEPER OF MY SOUL.
Saffi, my companion, friend and keeper of my soul taught me about the value of sharing your life with an animal. There are no words to adequately describe what Saffi has brought into my life. People often talk about the health benefits of having pets … I do not believe in PETS. I believe we add fur babies to our family to provide them with security and love, just as we would when deciding to have a child.
Weekends With My Wee Fam will give you more insight into my personal life and who I am. I hope knowing me more, builds trust in the content of this site. It is my soul’s journey to help as many people as I can.
